LKSD Yup'ik / Yugtun dual-language program
Every LKSD elementary school teaches in both Yup'ik (Yugtun) and English. When a child enters kindergarten, a language assessment decides whether Yugtun Language Arts (YLA) or English is their first literacy language for K-1; from 2nd grade on, students get equal time in YLA and English. In Bethel, ME School and Gladys Jung run the dual-language model and Ayaprun Elitnaurvik is full immersion. Yup'ik curriculum questions go to the LKSD curriculum department (curriculum_department@lksd.org) or the district office, 907-543-4800.
