Culture can strengthen identity, belonging, connection, and purpose; things that support individual and community wellness. Inuit cultural values are deeply rooted in relationships and interconnectedness, including connection with the land, sea, and animals. That connection can grow through everyday moments: picking berries, preparing traditional foods, spending time on the land, learning language and stories, listening to Elders, practicing traditional skills, and passing knowledge from one generation to the next. These experiences can help young people know who they are, know where they belong, connect to themselves and others, and recognize that they have knowledge and traditions worth carrying forward. Substance use prevention isn’t only about reducing risks. It’s also about strengthening the things that protect us. When we keep culture strong, we help keep connection strong, too.
