This October, NVOK is honored to spotlight Ruth Nelson, whose life reflects the strength of our Iñupiaq culture, the importance of family, and the wisdom passed down through generations. Ruth, whose maiden name is Kowunna, carries the Iñupiaq names Immullasuk and Qimatchuq. Some of her favorite childhood memories are the stories her father shared, which have stayed with her throughout her life. Her parents taught her important life skills, including sewing and baking. Today, she is proud to see the love of baking continue through her daughter and granddaughter. Among the Iñupiaq Values closest to Ruth’s heart are Knowledge of Language and Love for Children. She hopes younger generations will continue learning traditional hunting, sewing, and carving skills that help preserve our culture, traditions, and Iñupiaq foods. Quyanaqpak, Ruth, for sharing your story and reminding us of the importance of preserving our language, traditions, and Iñupiaq way of life for future generations.
